Description of the house

Small holiday house (gite, character village house) with roof terrace, for 2 persons to rent in south west France / Lanquedoc Roussillon.

Location: The house is situated in the heart of the old village of Siran, a small village in the department Hérault, famous for its wine, at the foot of the Montagne Noir and halfway between Carcassonne and Narbonne. It lies in a narrow lane with no traffic noise. When standing on the roof terrace, you have a beautiful look over the hills and vineyards of the Minervois. On clear days you can see the Pyrenees. The village has a grocer, baker, post-office, bar/café and a restaurant. Mobile shops regularly offer fruits, vegetables, meat and sausage, fresh fish, mussels and oysters. 10 minutes away by car is the market-town Olonzac with supermarket and other shops and weekly a typical southern French street market.

Description of house: It is a small house with 3 floors (each 18m²) and is suitable for 2 people. 3 steps from the street lead into the dining-room with open fireplace and kitchen area. On the first floor there is a bedroom with double bed (160x200) and bathroom with shower, WC and washbasin. On the second floor a room with sloping ceilings and French windows leading on to terrace. There is another double bed (120x200). The small roof terrace is south-east-facing and not overlooked by neighbours.
The house has been newly renovated in local style to combine modern comfort with the flair of a small 18th century stone house. It is charmingly furnished with lovingly selected pieces which give it an individual atmosphere. The kitchen is well-equipped with 2 hot-plates, a small oven, a dishwasher. Sheets and towels are provided. No pets!.

Surroundings/leisure activities:

The area is above all well- known for its good wine, but also as the country of the Cathars with their ancient settlements and castles e.g. Minerve, Carcassonne or Lastours. Beautiful Romanesque churches, the famous abbey of Caunes, well-preserved Dolmen, medieval villages, countless chateaux, the Canal du Midi and caves; all this lies nearby and can be explored on foot, by bicycle or car. You can swim and wind-surf at the nearby Lac de Jouarres (5 Km), in the swimming pool at Peyriac (8 Km) or of course in Mediterranean with its miles of white sand beaches (just under an hour’s drive). You can also swim in the romantic mountain rivers or the lakes of the Montagne Noir. You can horse-ride in the Garrigue of the Montagne Noir or rock-climb near Caunes (13 Km). The surroundings of Siran are ideal for walking and hiking.
But you can also relax with a “petit rouge” under the plane trees of the “Café du Minervois” and watch the boules- players. Perhaps you want to enjoy the delights of the French cuisine in the many restaurants in the environs or to taste the wine directly at one of the local vintners. You can sit on the banks of the Canal du Midi and watch the boats passing slowly by. Perhaps you visit one of the weekly street-markets in the local towns. There are colourful flea markets from April to October nearly every weekend in one or other of the villages. In the summer months there are numerous concerts, open-air theatre and festivals. The village fetes are celebrated with pop and rock but also with the traditional tango and musette.
You can enjoy shopping in Bezier, Narbonne, Carcassonne, even Toulouse or Montpellier, all cities with southern flair and medieval buildings. Perhaps you are tempted by a trip to the castles of the Corbières (Quéribus, Peyrepertuse), to the Pyrenees or to Spain (Gerona is about 2 hrs, Barcelona 3 hrs by car).

Airports nearby are: Carcassonne (35 Min), Toulouse, Montpellier, Perpignan (90-120 Min). Ryan Air Fly daily: London-Stansted to Carcassonne; Charleroi to Carcassonne; Frankfurt-Hahn to Montpellier
