This holiday home is located in the region: Lower Normandy, in the department Manche in West France.
 L’Auvergne looks across a gently-sloping valley, dotted with oak coppices and meadows of beautiful cream and brown Normandy cows - les vaches Normandes.
L’Auvergne is home to our lovely friendly sheep, Toulouse geese, Muscovy ducks and often ducklings and nests of eggs - hatching in spring and early summer. Two small dairy and beef suckler herd farms lie on either side of the meadow with outdoor calving.
The self-contained holiday accommodation with two shower rooms/ 3 WCs (extended this year with extra bedrooms), with private meadow for guests, adjoins the owners' 18th century stone farm cottage. Guests are able to enjoy circular walks (it may be possible bring your pet - please enquire and we can discuss) along deserted lanes, beginning with a bridle path only accessible on foot or by bicycle – in spring and summer carpeted with foxgloves, primroses, wild orchids and honeysuckle. Popular with walkers and naturalists, the valley boasts barn owls, tawny owls, buzzards and sparrow hawks, not to mention pine martens, weasels, stoats, hares and wild boar; the latter snuffling along the chemins at night, digging up acorns.
. Accommodation Bedrooms (four on ground floor): Bedroom 1 with double bed. Bedroom 2 with double bed/single bed. Bedroom 3 in adjoining bedrooms annexe with connecting door from hallway (ideal for another small family or grandparents) with large single bed, feather sofa and ensuite shower room (with handrails) and WC, and double doors leading to sunny evening terrace. Bedroom 3 leads to bedroom 4 with small double bed and ensuite WC and washbasin (raised WC with handrails). Bedroom 5 is on the upper floor, leading off the kitchin/living room area and doubles as a playroom/games room (6m x 4m), with (folding) Ping Pong, games and toys as well as a double sofabed and single bed. The shower rooms have large rolltop washbasins and shower cubicles. Electric towel rails. We have a baby-bath available. Stairgates top and bottom for stairs if needed. Child seat/step/potty if needed.
Kitchen: Spacious kitchen area on first floor, with generous work surfaces and cupboard space, gas hob, electric fan oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, coffeemaker. Dining area seating for up to 10.
Living Rooms: Large loft-style living room (7x5m) / open plan with kitchen on first floor with comfortable sofas. Wi-Fi internet access, TV (English and French terrestrial channels only), DVD and radio/CD player.
Stable-door to private meadow area via short staircase. Stable door in living room doubles as stair gate to steps to gite garden at rear if you have young children.
Evening sun terrace leading out of bedroom 3 with double glazed doors for drinks with seating and drinks table.
The property is cleaned before each booking. We ask guests to leave the property as clean and tidy as they find it. Optional €50 cleaning tariff.
THIS IS AN IDEAL PROPERTY FOR GRANDPARENTS AND A FAMILY OR TWO FAMILIES.
Notes on accommodation: L'Auvergne is virtually traffic free but also has gate to ensure that garden is enclosed (please note there are steps in garden and up to kitchen/sitting room). We are situated at the end of a long lane serving one farm and our property. No through traffic except the occasional tractor. Children are able to explore the bridle path that continues from l'Auvergne and enjoy space to run without having to watch out for vehicles.
Electric heating in all rooms. Stair gates available on request. S Good parking area for 3 cars.
Amenities/Facilities provided: Hob/stove oven fridge/freezer microwave dishwasher washing machine iron/ironing board, tv, wireless internet access, cot, high chair, barbecue.
Accessibility: The kitchen/dining-room/living room is on the first floor, reached via one flight of standard sized stairs, a stable door leads to small flight of wooden steps leads down from the living area to a good-sized garden for guests' use only, with garden chairs/table, loungers and a barbecue. Flanked by hedges of blackthorn, hazel and oak. A deep grassed bank drops down at the end of the meadow into the entrance to L'Auvergne with parking area. The other side of the gite garden is the sheep meadow with our lovely sheep, large and small!
Coast/Beach Approximately 6kms (15 mins drive) to nearest beach. The western coast of Les Cotes des Iles nearest to Besneville are unspoilt clean sandy beaches with Blue Flag accreditation. Barneville-Carteret beach (10kms - 20 mins drive) has a sheltered cove with lifeguard surveillance in summer months. The beaches are never crowded and often, in mid-season, will only have a handful of other beach goers, if any at all. Golf: There is a nine-hole golf course at the seaside resort of St Jean de la Riviere, near Barneville-Carteret (10 kms from Besneville). Horseriding: Two equestrian centres nearby.
Special interest holidays: If guests are interested in ducks and geese, we have a small flock of Muscovy ducks and their yearly offspring and a pair of 'retired' geese. We are happy to share our experience of rearing, feeding, breeding, water courses/ponds and how to give domestic waterfowl a free-range life while maintaining and enjoying a flower-garden and vegetable plot.
Cycling: We are able to bring back hire cycles for guests from the hire centre in the local seaside town of Portbail and return them at the end of the stay.
